Mesh communications
Use local, device-to-device messaging as one layer in a communications plan rather than treating it as a replacement for every network.

What a mesh can do
A mesh network can pass short messages between nearby compatible devices, sometimes through other participating devices. Its useful range, speed, privacy, and reliability depend on terrain, power, antenna placement, configuration, and how many people are participating.
Design the message system
Technology works best when the human protocol is already clear.
- Use agreed names, locations, timestamps, and message priority levels.
- Keep messages short and factual; separate observation from rumor.
- Set check-in windows and a process for missed check-ins.
- Protect batteries and designate people to maintain, test, and document the network.
Know the limits
A device that shows a message was sent does not prove that the intended person acted on it. Do not use an untested mesh as the sole channel for evacuation, medical emergencies, or identity-sensitive information.
